  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $4.44/lb . Indicators at 6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb higher, and after jumping earlier, the price has done little since. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Monday and now total 451,500 tonnes. European markets are quiet and mixed this morning, apparently waiting for Wall Street to open and give it some directional guidance. After a brutal Monday, US futures are higher this morning. We cold see nickel jump a little higher when US markets open.

  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.51/lb . Indicators at 6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb lower, and trending lower after earlier gains. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Friday and now total just under the 452,300 tonne level. Once again, we are watching nickel shadowing equity markets, which are lower on news that industrial profits are lower by 8% in China. Friday's large withdrawal in nickel stocks, if it holds, could see LME nickel stockpiles close lower on the month for second consecutive month.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $4.43/lb . Indicators at 6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.04/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Wednesday and now total just over the 454,800 tonne level. LME traded nickel is not shadowing European equity markets for a change. Based on cancelled warrants now registering over 45%, we would speculate that large trading houses have decided its time for nickel to trade higher than it currently is. Whether this move proves successful, is something only time will tell. The demand side is not sending any hints that the bear market will end anytime soon. And the supply side is still producing more nickel than is being consumed. We are on the road tomorrow, so our next update will be Monday, the 28th. Have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Monday and now total just under the 452,700 tonne level. European and US equity markets traed higher yesterday and this helped pull nickel slightly higher. Today, the opposite is true. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Friday and is now higher than where the month started. Shanghai Metals Market reports stockpiles of nickel ore at six major ports fell by 50,000 tonnes last week and now total 10.89 million tonnes.   Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Thursday's trading session at $4.51/lb . Indicators at 6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.04/lb lower, and struggling to establish a session floor. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose for a third consecutive session and now total 453,000 tonnes. The Federal Reserve did exactly what we suspected yesterday, and once again, showed it is afraid of a very fickle market. The US Dow only ended down 66 points yesterday, but saw stocks drop by over 300 points in the last half hour of trading. Futures are down sharply this morning. So why did the Fed bow to the desires of the market, yet the market is in retreat? Because by giving the market the near no existent interest rates it desires, it told the world they did not have faith in the US economy. What will it take for the Federal Reserve to once again show some confidence in the US economy? Who knows but apparently low unemployment and low inflation aren't it. Someone should start asking if the Federal Reserve feels the US economy is now solely dependent on its generosity? No real trade news today so we will leave yesterday's post up. Have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $4.57/lb . Indicators at 6:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb lower, and currently trading at a new session low. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME licensed warehouses rose for a second session and now total just under the 450,350 tonne level. European markets are trading quietly so far this morning, with US futures slightly lower, as world markets eagerly anticipate the US Fed decision to be announced at 2 pm EST. Will they raise for the first time in years, or continue to pass out free money? One needs to remember why interest rates are so low. This was an important piece of muliple economic 'stimulus' packages, and intended to be an emergency room IV to markets. After nine years, it has gone from an IV saline, to a heroin feed for market investors. Every little burp in some economic report causes the market to yell foul and warn that the economy is far too fragile to survive on its own. Will the Fed have the intestinal fortitude to raise rates today? We doubt it. But we would be willing to bet if they do, it will presented in such an apologetic manner that markets will wonder if it might be another nine years before they see another increase.

Commodity markets are still treading water, awaiting the Fed interest rate decison due out tomorrow at 2 pm EST. Until then, nothing else really seems to matter.   Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $4.50/lb . Indicators at 6:10 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb lower, but presently bouncing off session lows. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Monday and now total just under the 447,800 tonne level. Someone at Shanghai Metals Market is probably regretting their forecast made last Friday - "Nickel prices are expected to keep rising this coming week, Shanghai Metals Market foresees". That's one of those Homer Simpson 'Doh" statements, one we see with SMM forecasts more than we should. Nickel has bounced off weak support near $4.42/lb this morning, but its resilence probably depends heavily on what equity markets do. Nervous eyes are on the Fed Thursday and its interesting to watch how the markets thru media reports, are trying to blackmail the Fed into leaving the rates alone. In fact, one agency yesterday, said the Fed shoould not only not raise rates, but should consider further stimulus steps. One article on Bloomberg exclaimed "A Rate Hike, Followed By  A Market Crash". In fact, the author of this partiuclar article was forecasting a market crash ext year, rate increase or not, but that message was lost in the title.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.67/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.13/lb lower this morning. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Friday, after dropping the prior seven sessions, and now totals just over the 448,300 tonne level. SMM is reporting nickel ore stockpiles at six major Chinese ports rose 480,000 tonnes over the past two weeks and now totals 11.39 million tonnes. This is its highest total since June. Data releases Sunday shows factory production and fixed-asset investment in China were both weaker than expected in August. World markets seem to be brushing this negative news aside, with all eyes on the Fed decision due out Thursday on a possible rate increase. European markets are trading higher, and US futures are positive.

Nickel rose above the $10,000/tonne level this morning and with US equity markets expected to open higher, the market should be able to hold onto this level for the day. • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.41/lb . Indicators at 6:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.08/lb higher, with other London traded base metals trading higher as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Monday and now total just over the 451,350 tonne level. With little else to give it direction, nickel is following the overall commodity pursuit of equity markets, which have been volatile on Chinese economic concerns. Expecting more Chinese stimulus after further weak economic data, US futures are sharply higher this morning, as are European markets. With teh Fed meeting in a week, and a possible rate increase in the cards, we don't expect the volatility in the market is over just yet.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session unchanged due to holiday closure. Indicators at 6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.13/lb lower, with other London traded base metals trading lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel store din LME approved warehouses fell on Friday and start the final third of 2015 just under the 453,900 tonne level. Chinas manufacturing PMI fell to 49.7 last month and markets already concerned about a slowdown in China, are once again, heading for the exits today. Looks like the sell sign is flashing across the board, so if you thought things were calming down, you better tighten that seat belt. Volatility defined the end of August and is laying claim to the beginning of September.
