Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $4.07/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Monday and now total just under the 381,100 tonne level. Equity markets are getting some relief from the Brexit sell off today, but we will have to wait and see if it turns out to be more than a dead cat bounce. Base metals are in tow, shadowing stocks, but with no where near the volatility, or price swings. The market remains uncertain of what effect the Brexit vote could have on world economies, so expect the volatility to stick around for awhile.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.09/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.04/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on both Thursday and Friday and start the week just under the 381,800 tonne level. Markets were taken completely by surprise on Friday, when Britain voted to separate from the EU. The Euro fell and continues to trade lower today. Equity markets fell sharply lower on Friday and are faring little better today. But base metals have shown very little reaction in comparison. Nickel fell 2% on Friday, but has recovered much of that today. The political situation in the Philippines is offering moral support for nickel, but we expect a volatile week ahead as traders try to determine the long term effects of Brexit.
  • Average price of cash nickel so far this month - $4.02/lb

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $4.19/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.04/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now total just over the 383,500 tonne level. Today is the big day in Britain, with the Brexit vote taking place as we write. The bets are on stay, which should not only boost the market, but might even give a boost to the Euro, a positive for base metals. If exit wins, all bets are off. No one really knows what to expect if the majority of Great Britain citizens vote to leave the Euro, so no none really knows how the market will react. The Euro would most likely fall, which could drag base metals prices along with it. This week the anti-mine rhetoric coming out of the new Philippines government caught a lot of attention and the new head the Department of Environment and Natural Resources comment today that open pit mining is madness is sure to raise some eyebrows. This is our last update for the week. We hope each of you has a safe and relaxing weekend and we invite you back next week.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $4.17/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total just over the 385,550 tonne level. The Euro continues to strengthen, which is boosting commodity prices. Nickel is also getting support from the situation in Philippines and a potential shift in government support for mining from the incoming President. After Indonesia stopped the export of raw nickel ore, the Philippines have become the dominant source for China. A disruption to this supply source, could make so called 'pig nickel', far less of a market player and price spoiler.
  • Average price of cash nickel so far this month - $3.99/lb

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $4.21/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose slightly on Monday and now total just over the 386,050 tonne level. After a big news day yesterday, nickel related news is light today. Nickel closed at a six week high yesterday on a strong Euro, but we are seeing a struggle this morning between those taking some profits and those who are trying to drive the price higher. Euro is still climbing so we don't see the rally ending anytime soon. It's all about the Brexit vote on Thursday and with Marketwatch headlines like "Soros says if Brits vote Brexit, start bracing for a ‘Black Friday’" you can understand why the markets are paying close attention. The sentiment had seemed to favor a majority vote to leave the European Union recently, but the latest poll, showed sentiment had shifted to staying. Thus, the market is reacting favorably.

  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.11/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.05/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Thursday and Friday and start the week just over the 385,900 tonne level. The Euro is getting a bounce from reports that polls show the Brexit referendum could fall short. This, in turn, is giving metals trading a boost. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now total just over the 388,600 tonne level. Nickel was up yesterday on a spike in the Euro, after the US Fed left interest rates alone, showing no faith in the US economy to roll on its own. But, as we predicted yesterday, Brexit fears came right back to the forefront and the Euro, and nickel, have given back most of yesterday's gains. The Brexit referendum will be held one week from today, so expect market volatility to continue for another week. If you want to know where nickel will trade, watch the Euro. As it trades stronger against the US Dollar, base metals trade higher. When the US Dollar trades higher, nickel prices will typically slump long term. Industry news was on the light side today. This is our final update for the week. Have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $4.03/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total just under the 389,150 tonne level. Nickel is getting a boost from a stronger Euro this morning, as Fed concerns temporarily put Brexit concerns in the back seat. FX traders are betting the Fed under Yellen will leave interest rates alone again, which implies the US economy is still struggling and needs an IV of nearly free money to keep its economy above water. Wall Street will welcome the news, but when Brexit concerns return to the front seat, the market will get nervous again. The Fed has become the dealer to an economy hooked on its 'drug', and now it fears the withdrawal symptoms could be too much for the addicted economy. So the stimulus will continue, and the economy will continue to crawl ahead, and all will pretend all is well.

Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Monday and now total just over the 390,650 tonne level. Markets are suffering from Brexit fears and tomorrows Fed announcement. No one really expects the Fed to raise interest rates, and the odds are against a Brexit, but the possibilities exist, and thus the market is full of that thing it dreads more than anything - uncertainty.   Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.05/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME licensed warehouses fell on Thursday and Friday and start the week just under the 393,750 tonne level. Traders are fighting to keep  nickel above the $4/lb level, and the strength of the Euro is helping, but the Dollar is slowly recovering from its big drop earlier this month on concerns of a possible Brexit. The S&P China Steel Index is disappointing, to say the least. And there is news that South32 may not strike and QNI may reopen.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $4.06/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.05/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now total just under the 394,750 tonne level. The Euro continues to trade higher against the Dollar and this is giving bullish metals traders the ammo they need to drive prices higher. Nickel closed above $4/lb for the first time since early May and is nearing its 200 day moving average. While the overall news trend remains of one where supply far outweighs demand, this week offered trader some news that appeared bullish. The Euro spiked last week after a dismal US jobs report was released and this makes US Dollar traded metals less expensive. China import data showed that China metals imports remains strong, even in a period typically witnessing a seasonal slowdown. And the new President elect of the Philippines has been talking tough against miners in that country. Nothing in the news to make one believe demand is any higher, but there it is. Our next update will be Monday so we wish our readers a safe and relaxing weekend.

Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total just over the 395,500 tonne level. Traders were mostly encouraged by May import numbers for metals, released by China before they began an extended weekend for their annual Dragon Boat Festival. The Euro has done little since its bounce on Friday, but it is also holding on to that days gains. Market should be tame the rest of the week, with Chinese markets closed.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $3.93/lb . Indicators at 5:50 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.01/lb lower and right at its 100 day moving average. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Monday and now total just under the 396,500 tonne level. While the media is crediting the future strike in Colombia as the reason the price of nickel is bumping higher, we say look to the Dollar. The Euro has bounced off lows since Friday's US jobs report, but is showing some strain today. The same could be said about nickel. A strike could add some positive sentiment but wth nearly 400,000 tonnes of nickel being held in LME warehouses and Lord only knows how much is being stockpiled elsewhere, it would take a whole lot of strikes, earthquakes and hurricanes to have any long term effect on nickel pricing.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $3.86/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.07/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel have fallen for the last two days and begin the week just over the 395,750 tonnes. And yes, we have finally fallen below the 400,000 tonne level. Nickel prices got a boost Friday as the US Dollar tumbled on a dismal jobs report. This news didn't get to Asian markets until after their markets were closed, so the lower Dollar helped nickel climb higher in Asian markets this morning, This momentum has continued back to Western markets today, and will last until someone starts taking profits, or the market starts finding confidence in the Dollar again.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $3.85/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.04/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now teeter just 8 tonnes over the 400,000 tonne level. Interesting discussion going on in the metals media about how the onset of the so called pig nickel production in Indonesia is more than offsetting the slowing production in China. The need for this production was mandated when Indonesia banned the export of raw nickel at the beginning of 2014. Now these new plants are coming online and producing nickel into an industry that really needs nickel production to fall, if prices ever stand a chance of rising with any holding power. There continue to be rumors ever few months that Indonesia might pull back from these export bans, but with nickel production plants now starting to produce, the need for lifting such a ban, and the effect these reports have on the traded price of nickel, loses steam. This is our last report for the week, so we wish you all a safe and relaxing weekend.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $3.83/lb . Indicators at 5:50 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03//b lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses starts June just over the 401,500 level. Nickel is trading around $3.80/lb this morning, which is about $.10/lb lower than it has averaged so far in 2016. We should see LME stockpiles of nickel fall below the 400,000 tonne level for the first time since November 26th, 2014 sometime this month. This could give the market a psychological boost, as the strike at Cerro Matoso might. But keep an eye on the strength of the Euro. When the Euro trades higher against the US Dollar, base metals lose some of the negative pressure. With the US Dollar strengthening since the first part of May, we have seen the price of nickel slide with the Euro.
