Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $4.75/lb . Indicators at 5:45 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.10/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose only slightly on Monday and still stand just over the 373,600 tonne level. The US Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan will hold meetings this week, and traders are suddenly a little more risk wary than they have been recently. No one really expects the Fed to raise rates, as a move in either direction could damage the stock market. Nothing has changed in the Philippines, so the main fundamental reason nickel prices have risen, remains in place.
  • Average price of cash nickel so far this month - $4.63/lb

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.73/lb . Indicators at 5:45 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.01/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Friday and starts the week just over the 373,600 tonne level. The news has been and remains, the crackdown on nickel ore mines in the Philippines. China has been successful in beating the higher cost of nickel by importing low grade nickel ore and paying the higher processing cost to extract the nickel. Two years ago their largest source for this ore dried up when Indonesia banned the export of raw ore. China in turn, turned to the Philippines for the ore. Now a newly elected government, has gone after mining in that country. After four nickel mine closures, the uncertainty of future shipments has driven the price of nickel to near one year highs. And that uncertainty continues, so don't expect the volatility to end anytime soon.

Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now total just under the 375,550 tonne level.   Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $4.79/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total just over the 377,200 tonne level. The increase in nickel has stalled for the last week, with $4.81/lb throwing up a line of resistance. The Philippine Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Regina Lopez as shut down another nickel mine in her country, making it the fourth we predicted. These are the same four mines that were targeted by prior and much friendlier political administrations. Australian media is starting to play the China Sea strife between China and the Philippines as another reason Lopez is shutting down mines. We doubt that is the motivation for the closings, but the Philippine administration might look at it as a side benefit, and could potentially delay any re-opening.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $4.78/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.01/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Tuesday and now total just under the 377,750 tonne level. Nickel has held above a resistance level of $4.70/lb on two consecutive days, which has sent another bullish signal to traders. We show the next level of resistance at $4.86/lb. The trading price of nickel is now higher by nearly 20% YTD and up 13.9% in the last month. You can thank new Philippine Environment Secretary Gina Lopez, who has expressed her dislike for mining and now has the authority to make life difficult for miners in that country. Right now, she is shutting down mines on a weekly basis and it remains to be seen, if this is a move to force change in environmental safety - or a personal mission to permanently harm the industry.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.66/lb . Indicators at 5:45 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Friday and now total just under the 377,000 tonne level. News from the Philippines has another nickel mine closing due to environmental concerns. The new government has shut down three nickel mines in the past week and based on past government shut downs, we wouldn't be surprised to see at least one more mine shut down. A pig nickel producer in China has reportedly been shut down due to pollution concerns there. A reduction in dependence on pig nickel, could force Chinese stainless steel producers to buy more refined nickel, which in turn would help accelerate a downturn in current stockpile totals. This could add support to the bullish run nickel is in.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)

  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $4.76/lb . Indicators at 5:45 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.07/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose again on Tuesday and now total just over the 378,400 tonne level. Nickel's bull run continues and while the economic news from China is worsening, those who are eager to keep the metals run going, are quick to forecast stimulus on the horizon. S&P Global Platts announced their China steel sentimewnt index fell to a 16 month low in June. Nickel stockpile numbers have grown six of the nine sessions this month, although this may just be a suspension in buying while stainless steel producers wait out the bullish run and see if it has any staying power. Nickel closed at $4.03/lb one month ago today, and at $5.20/lb one year ago.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $4.56/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.15/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Monday and now total just over the 3788,100 tonne level. Nickel continues to climb and we are in one of those bullish stampedes that make little sense and so trying to describe what is happening is a waste of time. The market is wound up after being dormant so long and the enthusiasm this bullish run is being met with - speaks for itself. This isn't Pamploma, so unless you want to get hurt, don't try to run with the bulls and start protecting yourself.   Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.49/lb . Indicators at 5:50 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.09/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose for the fourth session this month and start the week just under the 377,750 tonne level. Volatility in nickel trading continues as traders watch the Philippine's new government animosity toward mining develop and world economies slow to a point where more government stimulus is probable. Money remains cheap and Brexit has given the Fed an excuse to keep it that way. Nickel has traded within a $1000/tonne range so far this month and a typical day has seen trading within a $400 tonne range. Volatility rules.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $4.40/lb  . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.01/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Tuesday and now total just over the 377,600 tonne level. Inventory increases are a rarity these days, only happening twice during the month of June. The bullish run for nickel appears to be hitting some headwinds, as concerns over world growth after Brexit, is overshadowing concerns about potential supply disruptions from the Philippines. We show major resistance around $4.70/lb with initial support at $4.20/lb.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $4.54/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on both Friday and Monday after rising slightly on Thursday. Stockpiles now stand just under the 376,850 tonne level. What a difference a few days make. Nickel traded as high as $4.72/lb on Friday, as nickel's bullish run went a little nuts, before falling back to close. To give you an idea of just how wound up the bulls are after a long drought, the market has risen from a lot of $8800/tonne to a high of over $10,400/tonne in the last eight trading sessions. Since the beginning of the year, nickel has traded as low as $7710/tonne on Feb 11th, to a high of $9550/tonne on May 3rd, prior to the last few weeks. Bulls have taken advantage of the Philippine news and run with it, and there is no reason to believe it will end, unless or until, the new Philippine administration clarifies some of their threatening language toward mining, and thus, nickel mines. We believe the bull run is unjustified, but understand why it is happening. Keep in mind, we have been here before and markets that rise unusually fast, have a history of falling equally fast. Timing the moves is where trades are won and loss.
