Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at
$6.06/lb
. Indicators
at 6:20 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.08/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total
just over the 357,000 tonne level. After the US Dollar rose prior to President
Trump's first Stat of the Union address, nickel saw some profit taking yesterday,
but the LME did not see the same degree the Shanghai Metal market or India's
MCX saw overnight. Today, nickel prices are in recovery mode as the US Dollar
falls to near four year lows. After we pointed to a pessimistic forecast
yesterday, we link to a more bullish forecast today. Next week will be the
last full week China operates before its annual week long shut down for New
Years holiday festivities. Typically prices are usually quiet during this
period but we suspect this year the market volatility could continue.
Average price of cash nickel so far this month - $5.83/lb
Average price of LME traded nickel in 2017 - $4.73/lb / 2016 - $4.36/lb /
2015 - $5.37/lb / 2014 - $7.65/lb

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at
$6.26/lb
. Indicators
at 6:20 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb
lower. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Monday and started today
just under the 359,300 tonne level. For a moment yesterday, nickel traded
over the $14,000/tonne level, having finally beaten the $13,000 tonne level
last Wednesday. That gives one an idea of just how exuberant the market is
based on little more than speculation. The Euro has risen in the last hour
and has erased all of the last few days losses, and nickel is now trading
off earlier lows. If you want to guess where nickel prices are headed in
the near future, predict the Euro. They seem to be working in concert.

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at
$6.19/lb
. Indicators
at 6:20 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.12/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Thursday and Friday and
started the week just over the 360,700 tonne level. Having finally punched
thru the $13,000 tonne level just a few days ago, nickel is eyeing the $14,000
tonne level today. Is this run justified? In our opinion, which means absolutely
squat, no. Besides a disruption in production at Ambatovy in
Madagascar due to a tropical storm a few weeks ago, a disruption due to end
anytime, there really has been no news on the fundamentals side. The US Dollar
is trading lower against the Euro which is giving a positive bump to commodity
trading, but hasn't done much since last Thursday. China stainless steel
prices are higher, reflecting the increase in nickel prices, while iron ore
prices are down since the first of the year. China is preparing to close
for their week long New Year holiday next month, so inventories are running
lean. Technicals remain positive although market is flashing that it is seriously
overbought. Will be an interesting week. Will market continue its bullish
run, fight to hold onto last weeks jump, or will traders bail before they
get caught with a falling knife? Stay tuned.

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at
$6.16/lb
. Indicators
at 6:20 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now total
just over the 362,000 tonne level. After spending the last eight sessions
under 30%, cancelled warrants rose back to that level with yesterday's
transactions. As for the price, nickel bulls were finally able to bust thru
both the technical and psychological levels, and it was off to the races.
Nickel is trading at levels last seen in June 2015. Much of the credit
for nickel's increase is the value it has gained from the lower US Dollar.
The Euro is trading at levels it last saw approximately three years ago,
according to currency traders. China steel prices are trading higher again,
as are stainless steel prices. Resistance is at $6.24/lb but when the market
gets overly exuberant, as it appears to be now, resistance levels can be
mute. Stainless steel users can plan on more price increases if today's market
price closes above $5.90/lb. This is our final update for the week, so we
hope each of you has a relaxing and safe weekend and invite you back next
week.

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at
$5.83/lb
. Indicators
at 6:20 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.09/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and started today's
session just under the 362,200 tonne level. Having slowly moved up to the
resistance level over the past few sessions, traders have jumped nickel well
above initial resistance this morning, and testing the $13,000 tonne level,
a second line of resistance, albeit psychological. Technical signals remain
positive but it remains to be seen if they are positive enough. No new
fundamental news out there. Cancelled warrants, which in our opinion sometimes
gives us an idea how optimistic the big trading houses are of the future
market, is trading just over the 28% level. This is respectable, but well
below the 37% level we saw back last fall when the bull market was running
loose. Some might say this is caused by the anticipated slow down in China
orders due to their upcoming holiday, and that may have some to do with it,
but the evidence of the past years doesn't supply a lot of evidence for that
being the main reason.

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at
$5.77/lb
. Indicators
at 6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.05/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Thursday and rose on
Friday and start the week just under the 363,200 tonne level. After floundering
for a few days, nickel bulls got ahold of the market on Thursday afternoon,
and haven't lost their grip yet. $5.85/lb is resistance and if the market
can beat that level, there is an immediate psychological level of resistance
($5.90/lb) that, in our opinion, is far more important to technicals. Technicals
remain positive, although they show the market is in overbought territory.
China steel had a nice spike on Friday, and was quiet today. The China stainless
steel price index we follow slipped slightly again today.

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at
$5.63/lb
. Indicators
at 6:25 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now total
just over the 362,500 tonne level. Nickel has done little the last few days
and the channel it finds itself trading in puts it back to where we ended
2017 at. Technicals remain positive for the long term, although short term
reaction to the volatility of this week is mixed. The China stainless steel
index dipped again overnight, down another .44%, and down 6.31% from this
time last year. A lot of what is going on in China right now is a combination
of production curtailment in light of pollution crackdown's and yearly shut
downs for the week long New Year holiday festivities. That is still three
weeks away but we typically see a slowdown in the weeks prior. The China
steel index rose on tightening inventory speculation. The Euro has done little
this week, but continues to trade at 3 year highs. This is our final update
for the week, and we wish our readers a safe and relaxing weekend and invite

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at
$5.69/lb
. Indicators
at 6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb
lower. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Tuesday and now total
just under the 365,000 tonne level. Nickel took a hit yesterday, down around
5% about an hour before we published yesterday's update. It regained some
of its looses later in the day, but is down again this morning. Still not
seeing any 'news' out there that would be spooking traders, and still believe
this is more of a profit taking moment. Support remains at $5.37/lb, while
$5.85/lb is giving technical resistance, and $5.90/lb is psychological
resistance. SMM has published its forecast for the early part of 2018, and
believes nickel prices will remain above $5.44/lb, at least until pig nickel
refineries in China come back on line in mid March. The China stainless steel
price index we follow is down again, down .57% from yesterday. China's steel
index is rising for a second day, and the Euro is trading near three year
highs - both adding positive support.
Average price of cash nickel so far this month - $5.73/lb
Average price of LME traded nickel in 2017 - $4.73/lb / 2016 - $4.36/lb /

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at
$5.83/lb
. Indicators
at 6:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.24/lb
lower. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses slipped slightly on Monday and
remain just over the364,200 tonne level. After failing to close above resistance
on two occasions over the past week, nickel was in a free fall this morning.
It has quieted a little recently, getting some support as the slide in the
Euro ends and turns around. If it turns into a rout, look for support at
$5.37/lb. Not finding any reason for the drop except the technical failure
to punch thru resistance with any consistency. Traders appear to be pocketing
some profits before the market takes them away.

Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at
$5.77/lb
. Indicators at
6:55 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.12/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel store in LME approved warehouses fell on Thursday and Friday and
start the week just over the 364,200 tonne level. With stockpiles falling,
seeing the cancelled warrants reading fall below the 30% level for the first
time since June of last year is a surprise. The Euro continues to trade higher
against the US Dollar, and currently trading at 3 year highs. This is giving
LME traded base metals a positive boost. Nickel traders appear to be making
another run for the $13,000 tonne level, after falling back to $12,600/tonne
last Thursday. A stainless steel index from China we follow fell .23% last
week, down 6.2% from this time last year. Interesting week ahead and we wish

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at
$5.87/lb
. Indicators at
6:25 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb
lower. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME licensed warehouses rose on Wednesday and now total
just under the 368,300 tonne level. Crossing $13,000/tonne yesterday, nickel
hit its highest level since April 2015. Back under we are now trading where
we were back in early November of last year, before nickel took a month long
break from last falls bullish run. We peaked at $5.87/lb twice back then,
so that is where we show resistance. Short term technicals have turned mixed,
but longer term remain positive. The Euro and China steel prices are quiet
today, so neither are adding any momentum to the market, in either direction.
Stockpiles are just under 4,000 tonne shy of where they were this time last
year, and 1500 tonnes ahead of where the year started. This is our last update
for the week, so we wish you a safe and relaxing first full weekend of 2018.

Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at
$5.76/lb
. Indicators at
6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.15/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total
just under the 365,900 tonne level. Nickel is jumping today, thanks in part
to a stronger Euro, and in part due to speculation based on yesterday's positive
World Bank forecast. The Euro is yet back to where it started Monday, but
its on the rise. The World Bank forecast sees warning signs for future growth,
but do not see them arising this year - thus giving traders room to speculate.
At the moment, nickel is trading above resistance at $5.87/lb, but off an
earlier high of $5.96/lb. $5.90/lb, or $13,000 kt will offer a psychological
level of resistance, which at the moment is holding.

. Indicators
at 6:25 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.01/lb
lower. Stockpiles
of nickel stored in LME licensed warehouses fell on Monday and now total
just over the 367,050 tonne level. So far, nickel is entering its third day
of doing a big nothing. Daily technicals remain positive, while hourly have
soured. The Euro is lower again today against teh US Dollar, adding negative
pressure. China steel futures are quiet today, while the price of nickel
on the Shanghai Metal Exchange Market, which typically plays follow the leader
to the LME, jumped over 1% last night. We noticed a tweet yesterday from
DNRR Global who posted a graph showing the expected sales of EV vehicles
in 202 wold require an extra 85,000 tonnes of nickel. The highest level of
nickel stocked in LME warehouses last year was back in January at 389,154
tonnes in August. The year started at 372,066 tonnes, only 6000 more tonnes
than this year started. Unless some major demand other than forecasted EV
increase hits, or production falls off a cliff in the next few years, stockpiles
can cover the increase in demand with years more in reserve.

North
American Stainless press release - For many years the North American Stainless
Traffic department has worked hard to bring you high service scheduling of
your product at very reasonable prices. Since our last freight rate change
more than five years ago, the freight industry has changed significantly
with new government regulations and operational cost leading to higher freight
expenses. In effort to offer stability in supply NAS has worked the last
couple of years to absorb these increases but the continued rise of rates
now requires NAS to pass a portion of these cost on through a freight rate
increase. Effective January 15th, 2018, North American Stainless will increase
rates an average of 20%. The rate increases will vary depending on shipping
lane/location. -

Daily
Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing(7:00 AM CST is 12 PM in London)
Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at
$5.79/lb
. Indicators
at 6:20 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb
higher. Stockpiles
of nickel store din LME licensed warehouses fell to start the week just over
the 366,600 tonne level. For 2017, stockpiles started the year at 372,066
tonnes and ended 5,454 tonnes lower. The most it registered for 2017 was
on August 31st, at 389,154 tonnes, and Friday's close was the low. Thus,
LME stockpiles did a big nothing during the year. Seeing a few reports that
nickel closed 26 to 27% higher for the year. This would apparently be based
on the fact nickel ended 2016 at $4.55/lb and closed at $5.79/lb on the last
day of 2017. That is one way of looking at it, but we would tend to think
the average price of nickel over the entire year would be a little more realistic
and an increase of $4.36/lb to $4.73/lb is much smaller. The average of the
first three moths of 2017 was much smaller at $4.67/lb than the $5.66/lb
of the last three. Either way, it was a good year for nickel producers and
with strong economies in most parts of the world, it was a good year for
stainless steel producers as well.
Average price of cash nickel so far this month - $5.18/lb (December average)
Average price of LME traded nickel in 2017 - $4.73/lb / 2016 - $4.36/lb /
2015 - $5.37/lb / 2014 - $7.65/lb
