Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $4.40/lb . Indicators at 5:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.00/lb unchanged. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose for a third consecutive day and now total just over the 382,000 tonnes level. Total stockpile numbers have gone up by over 10,000 tonnes in the last three days. Nickel was down sharply yesterday morning, recovered yesterday afternoon, and has done little today so far. For the week so far, nickel prices are down, stockpiles are up, and for a moment, one might think supply and demand numbers actually matter again. All is quiet on the Chinese front as many manufacturers are shut down for the Chinese New Year season. For those who haven't yet, they will be closed next week. This is our last update for the week so we wish each of you a safe and relaxing weekend.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.40/lb . Indicators at 5:40 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.05/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose sharply on Thursday and slipped slightly on Friday, and start the week just under the 372,000 tonne level. Nickel slumped to its lowest level since mid September 2016 on Friday, and a weaker US Dollar is helping it regain some of its composure today. Falling back below the $10,000/tonne level is psychologically important to traders, with prices in a down trend since the eleventh.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $4.61/lb . Indicators at 5:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total just over the 371,250 tonne level. Indonesia's decision late last week to allow nickel ore exports again stole some of the momentum nickel traders had, but the Philippines decision to close more nickel mines this morning, could reinvigorate traders. For now, it appears to have helped slow the decline in nickle prices and time will tell if this helps nickel break out of its current trend. The gap between the 20 and 200 MVA is now down to $.30/lb, with the current price near the low end of the spread.

Indonesia recently announced miners in that country can resume shipping nickel ore, if production exceeds what their smelters can process. Nickel is dropping like a rock on the news as traders bail on speculative bets they would not such a change. This is our last update for the week, so we wish each of you a safe and relaxing weekend.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $4.81/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell slightly for a second day on Tuesday and now total just over the 371,900 tonne level. We expect Indonesia to announce a change in their nickel ore export ban tomorrow, but we doubt they will return to the 'wild west' days of 'dig it and ship it'. Unless they leave the ban completely in place, any change will help alleviate the tension being caused by the anti-mining government in the Philippines and mine closures there. Traders are apparently betting the ban will stay in place, but we feel that is a risky gamble.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $4.63/lb . Indicators at 5:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now total just over the 370,900 tonne level. Nickel rose yesterday., but remains lower than December's average on fundamentals that turned negative at years end. Chinese nickel producers are forecasting Chinese stainless steel production could suffer this year as China shuts down older mills to help curb pollution. Indonesia could potentially reverse a three year ban on nickel ore exports, although we have our doubts they will drop it completely, if at all. The new Philippines government has been about as hostile toward mining as one could imagine, but New Caledonia, as well as other countries, will help pick up some of the slack. And production for processed nickel worldwide, remains strong. Traders are trying to determine what 2017 will bring, and earlier optimism has cooled some.
