Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $7.03/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.10/lb lower, with all other London traded base metals trading lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Monday and for the 11th session this month, recorded a new all time record high, which in today's case, is 177,036 tonnes. This reflects a net gain of 11,616 tonnes from the last day of March. Eurostat reports unemployment in the Eurozone is now a record 12.1%, Spain reports its GDP fell by 1/2 of 1% in the last quarter, and Greece reports retail sales fell 14.45 in February compared to last year. With this, the Euro is lower, which has stimulated commodity traders to take short term profits before the end of the month, and for most of the world, a May Day holiday tomorrow. The LME will trade tomorrow as the UK and US do not celebrate May Day. Three month nickel ended March at $7.56/lb and looks to close April below the $7/lb level. The average cost of cash nickel fell by nearly a full dollar per pound. Last years "bottom" was seen in August, late in the summer and typically, a slower period for stainless steel production, where the price of traded nickel closed on August 12, 2012 at $6.92/lb. This month, we saw nickel close on the 23rd at $6.86/lb. Another interesting fact about August 2012, was cancelled warrants rose over the 10% level for the first time, and have remained above that level for most of the trading period since. For this month, cancelled warrants have ended mostly in the 14% range. China markets are closed for the first three days of this week so activity from Asia is muted.

  • (Reuters) There has been persistent market chatter for some time that the State Reserves Bureau has been quietly buying imported nickel. • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $6.93/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb lower, with other London traded base metals trading mixed and mostly quietly. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses took a break from four consecutive gaining days totaling 7,434 tonnes gain, and fell slightly; now totaling just over the 175,750 tonne level. Nickel opened higher this morning, but fell sharply early, and is now getting a bump from a stronger Euro. The economic data from Europe was fairly dismal this morning, except for a surprisingly strong quarter in Great Britain, helping that country just miss out on a triple dip recession designation.  Spain's unemployment jumped to 27% and is now tied with Greece for the EU's worse. Added a link under Reports below that gives a technical forecast for nickel trading on the London Metal Exchange on a daily basis. European equity markets are higher on the news from the UK, and US Dow futures are higher on corporate earnings.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $6.94/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.08/lb lower, with other London traded base metals trading lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose for a third consecutive day, and to a new record high of 174,546 tonnes. This is the eighth time this month where a new all time record high has been set. The Euro is trading lower against the US Dollar, and this with news out of China that the preliminary version of HSBC’s manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index fell to a two-month low of 50.5 from March’s reading of 51.6. European stocks are mostly higher this morning after data showed the pace of region’s downturn didn’t accelerate in April. Yes, that's bad news, but not worse news, is now good news. The main concern in the preliminary purchasing managers’ index readings was that Germany fell into contraction for the first time this year. US Dow futures are higher as well, while Asian markets ended mostly lower overnight. Nickel traders continue to attempt to find footing, while fighting negative economic sentiment and growing stockpiles.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $6.88/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.01/lb higher, with other London traded base metals quiet and mostly lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose sharply for a second consecutive day, to a new all time record high of 173,976 tonnes. Nickel prices collapsed again after our Friday morning report and support now stands at $6.67/lb. Since the first week of February, prices have now fallen nearly $3400/tonne - or over $1.50/lb. RSI stands at 27, only slightly in oversold territory. Trading is quiet this morning, opening lower, then bouncing back to flat territory early, with little movement since. Asian markets ended higher overnight, European markets are trading higher this morning, and US Dow futures are higher at the moment. Markets are trying to shake off last weeks dismal numbers. The last time nickel closed below $7/lb was in June of 2009, back when world markets were digging themselves out of Great Recession lows. How low had nickel gone? It ended 2008 and began 2009 trading in the high $4/lb range. .

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Thursday's trading session at $7.05/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb lower, but attempting a recovery at the moment, with other London traded base metals trading mixed and mostly higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose to a new all time record high yesterday and now total 172,296 tonnes. Asian markets ended higher overnight, European markets are trading higher, and US futures point to a higher opening. Nickel closed above support yesterday, which sends a slightly positive signal that  a bottom 'might' be trying to establish itself. Commodity markets have been reacting to overall sentiment, so depending on how traders feel next week, will determine where nickel prices go. For nickel traders, it was a brutal week and one they do not want to se repeated anytime soon.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $6.99/lb  . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.01/lb higher, with other London traded base metals trading mixed and quietly. Stockpiles of nickel fell for a 4th day from last weeks all time record high, and now total  over 168,400 tonne level. Shanghai spot nickel ended down 2.8% overnight, with India nickel down slightly. Nickel opened lower this morning but has been climbing ever since. The Euro is presently trading higher against the US Dollar, but just took a hit and appears to be struggling to hold onto gains. European equity markets are trading higher this morning, the US Dow futures are higher, and it appears we are getting a bounce from yesterday's drop, as markets continue their see-saw pattern. Nickel still looks weak, with Bloomberg carrying an interesting article linked below. Nickel fell thru a support level yesterday of $7.01/lb, and can not afford to close below this level for a second day. Outside financial factors continue to determine nickel's trading sentiment, with fundamentals and even technical signals, taking a back seat.
  • Nickel prices continue to be buffeted by external factors that have little to do with the production or consumption of the mineral - or its end users. Monday's race for the exit's was followed by a big bounce on Tuesday, which was followed by another steep drop on Wednesday. And while we are describing the US Dow movement over the past few days, we could use the same description to define nickel training on the LME.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $7.12/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.09/lb lower, with other London traded base metals trading lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell slightly on Tuesday and now total just under the 168,550 tonne level. Nickel has closed two consecutive days below support so major support now lowers to $6.87/lb. This is a technical signal, and only one factor traders analyze when trading nickel or commodities in general. And when there is little news and outside factors to guide the overall market, it becomes a more important factor. Today, the news that the IMF is lowering its 2013 forecasts is putting the kaboosh on yesterday's bounce. The Euro had a big day yesterday, but is down again today. US Dow futures are lower, European markets are lower, and Asian markets closed higher, playing catch up to the bounce this side of the planet saw yesterday. Shanghai spot nickel closed 1.1% higher today after losing 1.58% the day before. India nickel is at 837.80, down 1.76% on the day. Nickel continues to look weak with its ability to hold steady yesterday tempered by the fact the Euro was over 1% higher.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $7.12/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around  $.02/lb higher, and off earlier lows, with other London traded base metals trading mixed and mostly subdued. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell for a second consecutive day on Monday and now total just shy of the 168,600 tonne level. After falling over $.65/lb in the last few sessions, nickel is trying to find its footing. Technically speaking, nickel has closed at least once below major support at $7.19/lb, and a second close today, could send a signal of further price declines. Whether technicals actually prove out or not remains to be seen, but it does tell us the weakness ni nickel prices should continue for the foreseeable future. Nickel is deeply oversold, and the Euro is up nearly 2/3 of 1% against the US Dollar, which is a big plus for nickel and commodity trading. Much of nickel's sell off can be credited to a general sell off of commodities worldwide, and with the dust starting to settle on this recent rout, it will be interesting to see if nickel can gain some recovery momentum.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $7.19/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.16/lb lower, with all London traded base metals trading lower today. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Friday and now total just over the 168,750 tonne level. It is day two of a general commodity bath and nickel is not escaping the rush. While others may attempt to put a finger on the cause, we are convinced this is bear charge is now feeding on itself and the effect is the news, not any supposed cause. Nickel in India ended 2.1% lower today, In Shanghai, spot nickel ended 3.7% lower. In London, the price of nickel has fallen below major support at $7.19/lb and if it closes below this level for two consecutive sessions (some might say it already did on Friday at $7.187/lb), then a technical signal is given for further price declines. The Euro is lower against the US Dollar, adding further negative pressure. China's first quarter GDP came in at 7.7%, shy of the 8% forecast. Asian markets ended lower, European equity markets are trading lower, and US futures are lower.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Thursday's trading session at $7.38/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.09/lb lower, with all London traded base metals trading lower this morning. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses gained yet again on Thursday, setting a new record high of 169,386 tonnes. European debt crisis news is back this morning, and at least for the moment, has put a halt to the bullishness in world equity markets. The Euro is down on confusion on whether Cyprus has asked for more financial aid or not. A group of euro-zone finance ministers is meeting today to finalize terms fo a rescue package to Cyprus, and European nervousness is spreading across the pond. With US futures lower, it appears some traders are taking some profits. At the moment nickel is still in a freefall, but with major support at $7.19/lb, we do not expect the decline to be too sharp by days end. Then again, we have been wrong before. Have a safe and relaxing weekend!

Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose to yet another record high on Tuesday and now total 167,700 tonnes. The Euro is trading stronger against the US Dollar, adding strength to commodity traders. World equity traders were stunned this morning when China reported a trade deficit, giving evidence that personal consumption in that country is increasing more rapidly than earlier thought. The Fed minutes will be released at 2 pm EST today, and this will guide the market thereafter. Nickel i showing signs of losing steam after three days on the rise.   Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $7.28/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb higher, with most London traded base metals trading higher as well. Stockpiles of nickel fell off their record high on Monday and now total just shy of the 166,800 tonne level. There was a trader quote on the Dow jones Newswire this morning that is worth quoting . "Fed stimulus remains a more important driver of base metal prices than supply and demand factors, traders say." With that said, the notes from the last FOMC meeting will be released tomorrow and will be scanned closely for hints on when Fed stimulus may end. There has been a lot of talk on what caused the sudden change in trader sentiment on US markets, and we feel it can go back to a debate held between two Fed members in Atlanta, Georgia the night before the market suddenly turned. In China, nickel and molybdenum prices rose overnight. The Euro continues to gain against the US Dollar, and in our opinion, accounts for much of the reason nickel is trading higher the last few days. A Chinese metals site is reporting Baosteel is cutting production of stainless steel due to lower demand.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $7.23/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.12/lb higher with other London traded base metals trading higher as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Friday to 166,866 tonnes, another new record high, the second record high set in as many weeks. Base metals, and nickel in particular, appear to be benefitting by a rising Euro, which rose sharply on Friday but too late to help nickel traders. They appear to be catching up today as the Euro extends its gains against the US Dollar. There is also some bargain buying taking place, in both commodities and equities, after a week that proved brutal to most.  There is little fundamental news to back this positive trend, and it is doubtful, in our opinion, that if it lasts very long unless there is an overall shift in trading sentiment. Chinese media reports ferrochrome, Jinchuan nickel and 1.8% laterite ore all lower today.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Thursday's trading session at $7.30/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb lower, with all London traded base metals trading lower, but only slightly. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Thursday and now totals just shy of the 166,300 tonne level. From a week ago, stockpiles are up 1,632 tonnes, but off Tuesday's all time record high reading of 166,716 tonnes. Markets are lower today as markets await to see if US employment numbers from March will send another slowing signal about the US economy. The Dow rose yesterday as traders bet the numbers would look good, while this morning, they have apparently lost their nerve and the market futures are lower. Nickel had a bad week, with daily trading ranges showing a consistent downtrend since March 25th. A better than expected US jobs report today could help boost nickel heading into the weekend, while a negative report appears to be already priced into the market. Have a safe and relaxing weekend!

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $7.43/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.09/lb lower, with most other London traded base metals trading lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel fell off yesterday's record high and now total just over the 166,00 tonne level. World equity markets are quieter today than yesterday, but base metals trading, specifically nickel, is continuing yesterday's rout. Nickel opened lower this morning and hasn't done much since. Nickel closed below a key support level yesterday and unless it gets a big bounce later today, it will close below the level for a second day, signalling further declines are very likely from a technical view. Yesterday's close was its lowest since November of last year. Container price for cleaned 18-8 stainless steel scrap is currently averaging $.69/lb in the US midwest, $.70/lb on the coasts, and $.75/lb in Shanghai, China.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Dow Jones reports three month nickel closed Thursday's trading session at $7.56/lb . Indicators at 7:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.10/lb lower, with other London traded base metals trading lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME licensed warehouses rose over the Easter weekend and now total 166,716 tonnes. This is a new record high, bypassing the 166,476 tonne total recorded on 2/8/2010. Nickel trading has been moving lower thru much of today's session, although its decline has been halted over the past few hours. Commodity markets are responding to PMI numbers from yesterday, with both China and US numbers disappointing and Europe numbers downright depressing. And while equity markets are trading at record levels in the US, the economies and North America and Asia are having a hard time finding footing with Europe problems muddying the path. Our China stainless steel index numbers continue to fall into territory we haven't seen since beginning tracking our index a few years back.
